Golf

Golf on the Costa del Sol is second to none in the world. From a 9 hole in La Cala to the Championship 18 hole course in Valderrama and everything else in between.

Mijas Golf boasts two terrific designs laid out by Robert Trent Jones.

Los Lagos

Los Lagos, the original course built in the mid-1970s, is a flat, long championship course with water hazards and large greens. Enjoyable for long hitters but also accommodating to those with a slice. Wide fairways with little rough means Mijas has become the most successful commercial course on the Costa del Golf.

Los Olivos

Los Olivos recently underwent extensive renovation to bring the course back to its prime after 18 years of heavy usage. This included new irrigation systems, and a redefinition of greens to USGA standards.

Greens are smaller and many are elevated. The par 3 14th is the most spectacular hole with magnificent panoramic views from the raised tees. Mijas Golf is a hospitable club with a pay-as-you-play policy. There are regular competitions to keep everyone interested

El Chaparral

The most stunning aspects of El Chaparral are the plantations of pine trees which are so tall they seem to touch the sky. On every hole these superb specimens gaze down as if in contempt at the efforts of those playing below. Nowhere is beyond their view: it is as if the course was hewn out of a pine forest, and maybe it was.

Calanova Golf Course

This course lies in Mijas’ golf valley between the sea and the Sierra de Mijas mountain range. It has magnificent panoramic views across the rolling countryside from nearly all holes, and is especially challenging to medium handicap players. It has been constructed to USGA standards with regard to the tees, drainage, bunkers and greens.

The fairways are wide with large elevated greens which demand accuracy with approach shots. Strategically placed bunkers and water features scatter the course. The 10th hole, a par 5, is considered to be the most difficult. The 11th hole requires a tee shot over a deep ravine.

Cabopino Golf Course

Inaugurated in April 2001. 18 holes with a par of 71 laid out by little-known Spanish architect Juan Ligues is short but very tight in places.

Very scenic course with views to mountains and seas. Buggies obligatory but included in the price of green fee.

The course suits players of all levels, and is completely flat. La Duquesa Golf Course

La Duquesa Golf Course is a typical Trent Jones layout demanding concentration and straight driving.

Winding around El Hacho beacon hill overlooking the Mediterranean to Africa, La Duquesa in terms of facilities, is probably the most complete club on the coast, with tennis, squash, gym, sauna, jacuzzi, bowls, yacht harbour and of course, golf.

At the spectacular 17th, just 129 metres tee to green but 30 metres straight down, you should beware of the wind especially if the poniente is blowing from the west. The views may play havoc with your scoring.

Miraflores Golf Course

Miraflores is both beautiful and challenging, especially for those who enjoy their golf with elevated greens and water.
Miraflores is one of the Costa del Sol's top leisure and resort developments.

Located in the hills above Mijas Costa it offers breathtaking views of the countryside down to the sea. The course has a number of elevated greens which require some tough walking so a buggy is often a good idea. The 18th green is tricky with severe slopes. Watch out for the 15th hole, where water forms a moat around the green.

Torrequebrada Golf Course

Since it first opened in 1976 this Pepe Gancedo masterpiece has been recognised as one of the most beautiful courses on the Costa del Golf.
Venue for the Spanish Open 1977.

Here, the tee shot is of prime importance. A wild drive and all may be lost as trees, woods, rough, bunkers and water are all very much to the fore. Should you be tempted to confuse short length with ease of play, the third hole - only 80 metres to a long and narrow contoured green - will soon disabuse you of this notion.

The greens and fairways are wide, and gently undulating, allowing the course to be suitable for everyone. There are four tees at each hole, two for competitions and two for others.

Fruit trees have been planted to improve the appearance, and offer protection from the sun they include avocado, eucalyptus, orange, lemon, fig and mango trees to make the course pretty and attractive to both golfers avifauna. Challenges include four lakes which occupy natural depressions and a number of streams.

Practice facilities include a driving range and putting greens.

The Golf Club Marbella

Once very private but now open to visitors, The Golf Club Marbella is a difficult but enjoyable challenge.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones it is a long golf course with opening holes crossed by ravines and gulleys which require accurate and brave teeshots. The 4th hole, a par 3, is just tee and green, while everything in between is bandit country. The 12th is a sheer pleasure with memorable sea views.

Valderrama Golf Club

Jeev Singh, wins the 2006 Volvo Masters at Valderrama Golf Club, Sotogrande October 2006 .

Home to the Volvo Masters (1988-96), the Ryder Cup (1997) and the World Golf Championships (1999-2000), Valderrama surpasses its reputation as number 1 in Europe.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones and lovingly attended by owner Jaime Ortiz Patiño, this is one of the continent´s toughest challenges. The 4th hole, a par 5 of spectacular beauty, ends on a raised green, next to a cascade of water on its way to the greenside lake. The famous par five 17th, features a green with bunkers behind and slopes forwards to an emerald lake. It is the favourite of spectators and the hatred of championship players.
